The hammam in Djerba: how a traditional bath really works

A hammam is not a sauna. It is a wet steam bath you go through in three stages: you heat up, you are scrubbed with a kessa glove and black soap, then you rest at length. Allow one hour to an hour and a half. At the village spa, the hammam and Turkish bath are booked, at extra cost.
